Dogs, like all living organisms, need water to survive. Water plays a crucial role in maintaining a dog's overall health and well-being. Water is necessary for all the body’s processes, digestion, blood flow, breathing, brain activity, waste removal. Without the necessary amount of water, damage to vital organs can occur.

The amount of water a dog needs per day can vary depending on several factors such as size, age, activity level, and the environment. Water helps to regulate a dog's body temperature, especially during hot weather. A dog's body will lose moisture through panting, urination and sweating through their paw pads. Drinking water helps to replace that moisture and keep the dog cool.

Most dogs will naturally drink as much water as their body needs for that day (as long as their owner is keeping an eye to clean and refill their water bowl).

Young puppies sometimes need more monitoring than older dogs on what they are eating and drinking (check with your veterinarian).

Dogs with health conditions, or on medications may need some additional monitoring on what they are eating and drinking (check with your veterinarian).

Your dog should have access to clean filtered water throughout the day in a bowl that is cleaned daily.

As a general rule, most dogs need to drink an ounce of water for each pound they weigh. (Check with your veterinarian for your dog's specific needs). , Just like when people exercise, and need more water, it is the same for dogs.

When taking walks, jogs, or hikes with your dog, bring sufficient water (for both you and your dog to drink).

Caution: Do not let your dog drink from puddles on the ground or ponds. There can be dangerous bacteria, parasites, or chemicals lurking in these waters that you will not be able to see that can make your dog very sick. Some examples are Leptospirosis, Giardia, anti-freeze, and dangerous herbicides and pesticides.

Here are some types of containers that can be used when traveling, walking, jogging, or hiking to make it easy to provide clean water to your dog.

  • Nylon collapsible bowl that does not take up much space in a backpack, or can be clipped onto a dog leash.

  • Dog water bottle with attached dispenser.

  • Dog water bottle with attached bowls for water and food or treats.
